Sahara Coins Introduces "Numismatically Yours" April 4, 2011

Building a Library

By Jeff Gresser, Senior Numismatists, Sahara Coins

Have you ever noticed that when a great speech is made by a figure of importance or by someone wanting to get a point across, it is often made with a library behind the speaker; the reasoning for this is to give the effect that the person delivering the presentation knows something about what he is trying to convey. A library represents an opportunity to be all that you can be in a particular field of knowledge; numismatics (coin collecting) being no exception to this rule. Numismatics is the study of coins, a numismatist is the one who studies coins.

Once a person has been bitten by the coin collecting bug; he becomes increasingly curious to learn much more about collecting. Generally, the first step in coin collecting is accumulating a diversified mishmash of coins with no real direction or plan in sight; that’s OK, most beginners start that way. Many mistakes are made along the way like paying too much for a coin based on inadequate experience is the most common right of passage paid by “Newbies.”

As time goes by; it is increasingly important to link up with a professional numismatist with a solid back ground and sound reputation to help in building a meaningful coin collection. We, at Sahara Coins have always been strong proponents in buying the book before the coin. It is vitally important to build a reference library; not only of the particular series that you plan to collect; but, coins that you do not collect. It is so amazing how relaxing it can be to study all coins. We; at Sahara Coins, are eager to help in your journey through the wonderful world of numismatics through books.

A library can be as simple as the basic reference books of price guides aka: Red book, Blue book, Coin World price guide, Coin World and Numismatic News weekly news papers; all of these publications will increase the appetite of anyone wanting to collect coins. Books represent knowledge and knowledge gives the collector the edge in assembling a meaningful collection. It is a proven fact that most truly great coin collections have a great library associated with them.

There are many opportunities to do well financially in coin collecting; but, the extent of how much success, relies on knowledge. Commit yourself to the process of becoming an educated collector and you stand a great chance of success. At Sahara Coins, we are committed to education. Let us help in building your library.
